Ilkay Gundogan complains about Germany’s disallowed goal in World Cup loss against Paraguay

Ilkay Gundogan was not in a good mood when he weighed in on Germany’s earlier-than-expected World Cup exit at the hands of Paraguay on Monday at Gillette Stadium.

The former German national team star was unhappy with Die Mannschaft’s lackluster performance. However, what Gundogan was really pissed off about was when the referees disallowed Jonathan Tah’s crucial goal during added time that would’ve won them the match.

“Today’s team performance definitely doesn’t need any sugarcoating… But what the hell was that VAR decision? In the Premier League, they’d just give a weary smile over something like that – especially taking back a decision. Of course, it was brutally disappointing too. Unfortunately, we failed to convince over 120 minutes ourselves,” Gundogan posted on X (translated from German).

During a corner kick in the 105th minute, Tah scored a towering header to put Germany up 2-1 against Paraguay. However, the referees waved off the goal for a foul by Waldemar Anton on Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

Former Premier League referee chimes in on Jonathan Tah’s disallowed goal for Germany

Germany thought they had taken the lead against Paraguay in extra-time after Jonathan Tah headed in Nathaniel Brown’s corner, until the VAR intervened. However, former Premier League referee Graham Scott believes that the goal should’ve stood.

“Goalkeeper Orlando Gill was briefly impeded by Waldemar Anton, but contact in such circumstances is commonplace,” Scott explained. “Players are entitled to their space on the field, and getting in an opponent’s way is not an offense in itself.”

“In this context, there would have to be clear evidence that the block had a meaningful impact on the keeper’s ability to play or challenge for the ball. Sure, you can build a thin case that Anton was guilty… But video review was introduced to correct obvious errors, not re-referee marginal calls,” he added.

With Tah’s goal disallowed, the match went to the penalty shootout, which Paraguay won 4-3. Coincidentally, Tah missed the final spot-kick for Germany, and Jose Canale’s score secured the seismic upset.
