High school region rodeo roundup: Moody leading in barrel racing, goat tying in East Region

Jun. 8—HURON, S.D. — Letcher’s Aubrey Moody was among the top performers at the first East Region weekend of South Dakota High School Rodeo Association competition, which was contested Saturday and Sunday at the Heartland Rodeo Arena.

Moody led the competition in the barrel racing and goat tying, and she is in second place in breakaway roping. In barrel racing, she scored 19 of a possible 20 points, with the fastest time in the first go-round in 17.013 seconds. She was faster in the second round (16.367), but Wessington’s Charleigh Brewer had the fastest time of the round (16.112).

In goat tying, Moody leads the region points with 19. She won the first go-round with a time of 7.16 seconds, and then was second-fastest in the second round with at time of 8.08 seconds. Alpena’s Londyn Mikkelson is fourth with 12 points and a top time of 8.88 seconds, and Parkston’s Elle Goehring had the second-fastest time of the first round (7.62 seconds), good for nine weekend points.

Mikkelson and Moody are standing in first and second place in points for breakaway roping. Mikkelson won the first performance with a time of 3.12 seconds. Moody then won the second performance with a fast time of 2.40 seconds. They each have 10 points after two performances.

Mikkelson is in third on pole bending points after the first weekend, scoring 12 points. Her best performance was a time of 22.939 seconds in the first go, which was third-fastest. Pierpont’s Bryn Sipple won both performances to score a maximum of 20 points, including the fastest time of the weekend in 21.459 seconds. Mikkelson was also third in the barrel racing with 14 weekend points.

Athletes that score at least three points in regional rodeos will qualify for the South Dakota High School Rodeo Finals from June 16-20 in Fort Pierre. Points from the state rodeo, plus points from their three-best regional rodeos (go-rounds) will decide the national qualifiers. The top-four point-earners from the season will be eligible to qualify for the National High School Rodeo Finals on July 19-25 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

In bareback riding, Ethan’s Hunter Hohn had the highest-scoring ride of the weekend with a 73-point ride to win the Saturday performance. He did not score on the second ride, giving him 10 points for the weekend, second only to Bradley’s Beau Hemmingson. In tie-down roping, Hohn has the fifth-best point total after scoring seven points in the first go-round.

Forestburg’s Layton Zoss had the second-best bull riding score of the weekend, posting a 69 in the first go-round. Wagner’s Frank Krcil was fourth with his 63-point ride. Colman’s Blain Kansanback was tops with a 70-point ride. There were no qualified rides in the second go-round.

The all-around winners from the opening weekend of competition were Brewer as the top cowgirl and August Steele, of Huron, as the top all-around cowboy.

The final weekend of regional rodeos in the East Region is at Watertown on June 12-14.

KADOKA, S.D. — The opening weekend of River Region rodeos in Kadoka saw a number of area standouts at the top of the leaderboard.

Gregory’s Taos Weborg and Winner’s Apollo Willuweit both scored 10 points to lead the region’s bull riders. Weborg had a 66-point ride in the first performance to claim the top score of the first go-round, while Willuweit had the lone qualifying ride in the second-go with a score of 58.

Weborg scored 16 points in bareback riding for the weekend, which was third-most behind Highmore’s Talon Ping, who had 19.5 points and Arrow Anderberg, of Mobridge, who scored 18.5 points.

Rope Reis, of Reliance, leads the steer wrestling standings in the River Region with 19 points after the first weekend. He was second in the first performance with a time of 5.67 seconds, just behind Colome’s Seth Heath, who won the event in 5.64 seconds. Abe Kaiser, of Millboro, was in second on weekend points with 15.

Reis teamed up with Springfield’s Treyvan Talsma to lead the scoring in the team roping with 15 points. They had the second-best time of the first go-round in 15.03 seconds. Synch Ness, of Kimball, and Oakley Schenefeld, of Dallas, are in third place with 12 points with their best time being 16.86 seconds.

Winner’s Roper Moore won both performances of boys cutting, scoring 74 points in the first round and 76 points in the second round to lead the field with a maximum 20 points.

Reven Moss, of Clearfield, leads the tiedown roping scoring after 18 weekend points. Moss won the second go-round with a top time of 12.35 seconds. Reis was also fourth in the tiedown roping after scoring nine points on the strength of the second-best time in the first go-round (17.42).

Reliance’s Adessa Haugen went second-fastest in the second round of goat tying with a time of 8.35 seconds and tied for second for the weekend with 14 points. Kiersten Spencer, of Pierre, also scored 14 points, and Merriman’s JJ Sterkel leads with 20 points. Morgan Lee, of Winner, was fifth for the weekend in the pole bending, scoring nine points with a top time of 22.227 seconds.

In reined cow horse, Colome’s Seth Heath is third in weekend points with 16 after a top score of 136.5. Dalton Grimes, of Kadoka, won both go-rounds and scored 20 weekend points.

The final weekend of regional rodeos in the River Region is at Winner on June 12-14.
