Ferrari Issue Statement as Fred Vasseur Remains Under Observation at Medical Facility

Ferrari issued a statement on Saturday morning confirming that team principal Fred Vasseur will not be at the Circuit de Monaco today.

The 58-year-old Frenchman is currently “under observation at a local medical facility” following medical checks, with the team declining to share any further details about his condition.

The statement reads in full: “Fred Vasseur will not be present at the circuit today. Following some medical checks, Fred will remain under observation at a local medical facility. No further medical information will be provided. We wish Fred a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back at the track soon.”

Deputy team boss Jerome D’Ambrosio will step in for Vasseur on Saturday and Vasseur’s place at Sunday’s race day remains uncertain.

Ferrari Were Leading the Field Before This News

Vasseur was on hand to see his team top both practice sessions on Friday before this news broke.

Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton went fastest across the two sessions, with Leclerc heading a Ferrari one-two in FP1 before Hamilton set the pace from his teammate in FP2.

Ferrari have been widely tipped as favorites heading into the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, which makes today’s qualifying session one of the more consequential of the season. Monaco notoriously rewards grid position above all else, so the team will need to deliver without their principal in the garage.

There’s nothing more to add on the medical situation until Ferrari chooses to share it – and per their statement, that may be a while. The whole paddock will be wishing Vasseur well.
