Whether it’s shoring up their cornerback unit or adding another dynamic linebacker to the equation, the Dallas Cowboys have every reason to make a defense-centered move before the start of the 2026-27 season.

Dallas was miserable on that side of the ball a season ago, and while the organization has made a few valuable additions already (Rashan Gary and Dee Winters), they’re still likely one contributor away from making significant noise.

CBS Sports’ Garrett Podell believes the five-time Super Bowl champions could sign the Washington Commanders’ 35-year-old All-Pro free agent linebacker at some point this offseason.

“(Bobby) Wagner’s age has to be the primary reason behind his lack of a contract,” Podell wrote Tuesday. “He stuffed the stat sheet with 162 tackles, 4.5 sacks and two interceptions. Wagner now has 14 consecutive seasons (2012-25) with 100-plus tackles, which is tied for the longest such streak since 2000 along with London Fletcher (20-13).”

“The Dallas Cowboys still lack a green dot, middle linebacker entering the 2025 NFL Draft. Even if trade acquisition Dee Winters ends up being the starter in the middle in 2026, having a future Hall of Famer to mentor the next generation at the position would be ideal for Dallas.”

It would be hard to argue against the notion that Wagner is among the best veteran LB options available for the Cowboys. In addition to winning a Super Bowl at the height of his illustrious career, the former second-round pick has used his stout run defense, tackling, and coverage skills to solidify himself as one of the best linebackers of all time.

Wagner has recorded 2,000 tackles, 39.5 sacks, 15 interceptions, and seven forced fumbles in 14 seasons, making his Hall of Fame case as clear-cut as can be. With the Utah State product still being available three months into the offseason, the Cowboys should be atop his list of potential suitors.
