The Washington Commanders ended up with their first tie of the season after their Week 5 matchup against the New York Giants finished 27-27 in overtime. However, the result felt more like a loss for Washington, as the team squandered multiple opportunities to close out the game. The frustrating finish was so painful for one fan that it reportedly even threatened his month-long sobriety.
JP Finlay of NBC4 Sports shared the heartbreaking reaction of a Washington fan who called into a show following the Commanders’ disappointing result.
“We just had a caller who said he was 1 month sober and yesterday broke him. ‘Had to go back to the cabinet after that,”’ Finlay wrote.

The Commanders appeared to have the game under control after building a 27-13 lead with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation.
Washington’s defense had also delivered a strong performance during the first half, limiting New York to just 26 rushing yards. That total tied for the fifth-fewest rushing yards the Giants had recorded against Washington in franchise history.
However, the Giants found their rhythm in the second half, with quarterback Jameis Winston leading the charge. The veteran signal-caller completed 33 of 54 pass attempts for 326 yards and three touchdowns.
Meanwhile, one of the biggest positives for Washington was Jayden Daniels’ return to the field after missing the previous two games with a dislocated left elbow. The young quarterback delivered a productive performance, completing 17 of 25 passes for 199 yards.
Daniels also added 103 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground. The Commanders QB made history with his rushing production, becoming the first Washington quarterback to record nine rushing touchdowns within the first three seasons of his career.
However, the tie left Washington at 1-3-1, while the Giants improved to 3-1-1. The result was particularly frustrating for the Commanders, given how close they came to winning.
Washington will now turn its attention to a challenging road game against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night in Week 6.
