The Boston Celtics have strengthened their guard depth following the shocking departure of 29-year-old NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown (he was traded from Boston to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks).

On Tuesday, the Jayson Tatum-led Celtics officially signed a former Memphis Grizzlies All-Star guard who’s earned $295 million in his career.

“The Boston Celtics announced today that they have signed guard Mike Conley Jr.,” the franchise’s press release stated. “Conley Jr., who is set to become the 14th player in NBA history to reach 20 seasons, has appeared in 1,226 games (1,143 starts) across 19 seasons with Memphis, Utah (Jazz), and Minnesota (Timberwolves), owning career averages of 13.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 1.3 steals in 30.7 minutes per game.”

Of course, Conley is no longer an All-Star caliber contributor at this stage of his career, as he’s lost the downhill burst and razor-sharp playmaking that made him a force to be reckoned with in his prime.

However, the 38-year-old has served as a valuable mentor for superstar contributors such as Donovan Mitchell and Anthony Edwards and has proven to be a reliable ball handler/floor general when his number gets called.

Conley averaged 4.5 points and 2.9 assists with the Timberwolves last season, shooting 33.5% from the field and 33.7% from beyond the arc. Needless to say, Conley is among the best veteran leaders a franchise could ask for.
