Day 4 of the Pittsburgh Steelers training camp went off without a hitch, giving fans an exciting look at what’s in store for Mike McCarthy‘s brand of Steel City football. There were several standouts deserving of praise, in addition to a few duds we should discuss, from the fourth day of practice at training camp.
From a veteran defender showing off his versatility to one playmaker seemingly falling down the depth chart, here’s a look at the biggest winners and losers from Day 4 of Steelers training camp.
Winners
T.J. Watt
Watt, capable of creating havoc as a pass rusher and blowing up run plays before they even get started, highlighted another aspect of his game that fans often forget: his pass coverage ability. Watt was able to intercept Aaron Rodgers as the outside linebacker dropped into pass coverage, wowing spectators and teammates alike.
Metcalf-Rodgers connection
Roman Wilson emerged as one of Rodgers’ favorite targets early in training camp, but Metcalf’s connection with the veteran quarterback was surging on Saturday. Metcalf was getting looks from Rodgers on short, intermediate, and deep passes throughout Day 4. If the two can continue to build chemistry over the next month, the rest of the league will have a big problem on its hands.
Drew Allar
Allar continued to ride the hot hand and sling the rock on Day 4, turning plenty of heads with some huge throws. One such impressive pass was his massive back-shoulder completion to A.T. Perry. Yes, fans should temper expectations about the rookie third-rounder, but Allar has really stood out so far in Latrobe.
Pat Freiermuth
When it comes to 2026 breakouts, Freiermuth has typically flown under the radar. But he looked excellent on Day 4, catching a touchdown from Rodgers on a route that honestly made linebacker Patrick Queen look silly. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that Freiermuth also saved the day by rescuing a child in the middle of a fan brawl on Saturday. This easily earned him a spot in the winners category.
Losers
Ben Skowronek
The talented special teamer didn’t have the best training camp practice, as he dropped two passes and ran a subpar route that garnered buzz in the wrong way. He’s almost guaranteed a roster spot thanks to his special teams versatility, but Skowronek needs to show more as a receiver over the next month.
Jaylen Warren
This one hurts. It’s not as if Warren isn’t immensely talented, because he is. But it’s becoming increasingly clear that Rico Dowdle is running away in the RB1 race. Day 4 of training camp confirmed much of the same. Warren has looked terrific over the past four years, but he needs to show this new coaching staff why he deserves the starting job over Dowdle.
