Every successful footballer has a story, but not every path to the top is straightforward. Bayern Munich defender Josip Stanišić recently reflected on the setbacks that shaped his career, offering an honest reminder that perseverance often matters just as much as talent.

“It made me stronger and showed me that I can come back and succeed despite adversity. Stephan Beckenbauer wanted to bring me to Bayern when I was 12, but I stayed with 1860 because I thought it would be easier to turn professional there. After the U-15s, I wasn’t taken on there anymore. After that decision, I sat next to my father in the car and thought he would be totally sad, but he hugged me and cheered me up. Chin up, you can still make it! I’ll never forget that. I then moved to Fürstenfeldbruck. And a year and a half later, I was scouted by Bayern again. Then it worked out,” Stanišić told FCBayern.com. “A little talent, but above all perseverance, hard work and belief in myself. Luck plays a part too, of course. You have to be given opportunities and then make the most of them.”

When asked what he would tell his younger self, the defender had a salient reply: “Believe in yourself! The journey is worth it, no matter how difficult it is. In the end, you’ll be proud of yourself.”

Stanišić’s journey serves as a reminder that careers are rarely defined by a single decision or setback. Being released from a youth academy can feel like the end of a dream for many young players, yet for him it became the beginning of a new chapter. The encouragement from his father at one of the lowest moments of his young career clearly left a lasting impact, reinforcing the belief that one disappointing moment does not determine an entire future.

That resilience has continued to define Stanišić as a professional. Whether overcoming injuries, competing for minutes in one of Europe’s deepest squads, or proving himself during every opportunity he has received, he has consistently earned his place through reliability and determination rather than headlines.

His final reflection may be the most telling. While he acknowledges that talent and luck both play important roles, he places the greatest emphasis on perseverance, hard work, and self-belief. Those are qualities that cannot be measured by scouting reports or transfer values, but they often separate players who reach the highest level from those who fall just short.

For aspiring footballers, Stanišić’s career is proof that rejection does not have to be the end of the story. Sometimes it is simply the motivation needed to write a better one.
