Argentina and Switzerland meet in the quarterfinal of the 2026 World Cup. La Albiceleste endured quite a test in its Round of 16 tilt against Egypt, rallying from two goals down to cut down the Pharaohs, 3-2.

Lionel Messi has been his usual talismanic self, tallying a tournament-high eight goals thus far. The Argentine supernova has scored in every game he has played in thus far. He’ll look to keep his hot run of form going against the Swiss, who survived a daunting penalty shootout against Colombia to advance to the quarterfinals for the third time in their history.

(All times ET)

Alvarez pushes Argentina out in front with curling strike

11:32 .m.: GOALLLLL! Alvarez finds the far corner with a splendid strike. That might do it for the Swiss

Argentina 2, Switzerland 1

11:25 p.m.: Not much in the way of chances in the first half of extra time. Perhaps the second half could be more fruitful.

11:07 p.m.: Back to action once more, this time for extra time.

End of second half: Argentina 1, Switzerland 1

90+9′: Kobel dives to stop fiery volley as game heads into extra time

11:02 p.m.: Kobel comes through with a timely stop in regulation’s waning moments, flicking away Lisandro Martinez’s last-second scissor kick to send the game to extra time.

72′: Embolo sees red after VAR review into alleged dive

10:35 p.m.: RED CARD! Embolo is served his walking papers after a VAR review into his actions after Paredes was initially carded for a foul on the Swiss striker. The referee sent him off after finding that he flopped on the play, resulting in his second yellow card and subsequent ban. Embolo is in tears as Switzerland is reduced to 10 men for the remainder of the contest.

67′: Ndoye levels score with slick finish beneath Martinez’s legs

10:30 p.m.: GOALLL! Ndoye finishes off a dazzling Switzerland move with aplomb, sliding his shot beneath a sprawling Martinez to level the scoring at one goal apiece.

65’: Martinez comes through with clutch stop

10:25 p.m.: Martinez comes alive to turn away Switzerland, responding well to a a header that flashed across goal. Looks like the Swiss are turning up the screw in their pursuit of an equalizer.

10:00 p.m.: Back to life here at Arrowhead Stadium. We’ll see what the second half brings about.

9:50 p.m.: Little to write home about regarding chances for the Swiss thus far.

32’: Switzerland’s penalty appeal denied despite Ndoye’s best efforts

9:32 p.m.: Good work from Ndoye saw the Swiss traipse deep into Argentina’s half. He slid a pass into Breel Embolo, who slipped past Lisandro Martinez to set up a one-on-one vs. Emiliano Martinez. The Argentina shot-stopper takes ball and man. However, the referee stuck to his guns, opting against whistling for a penalty.

11’: Mac Allister’s header gives Argentina lead

9:10 p.m.: GOALLLLLLL!!! Mac Allister opens the scoring, connecting with Messi’s corner and heading the effort into the corner of the net!

Argentina 1, Switzerland 0

9:00 p.m.: We are officially in action!

Pregame

8:59 p.m.: Here we go! Argentina and Switzerland is underway here at Arrowhead!

8:45 p.m.: Plenty of Argentina supporters in attendance for tonight’s contest. Looks like the concourses will feature a distinctly pro-La Albiceleste disposition.

8:30 p.m.: We’re about 30 minutes from kickoff here at Arrowhead Stadium. Messi and Argentina are heavily favored in this one, particularly with Manzambi missing out due to injury. Then again, shockers have found a home at this year’s tournament. Switzerland’s best bet? Attacking with pace. Perhaps that could explain Sow’s selection in tonight’s tilt.

7:45 p.m.: Here’s a look at starting lineups for tonight’s contest. Plenty of star-power in the Argentine ranks, with Alvarez retaining his place up top. Switzerland, meanwhile, switches things up slightly in attack, with Rieder moving into the No. 10 role and Djibril Sow coming in on the left flank. Jashari will drop to the bench for this one.

7:00 p.m.: Granit Xhaka endured a challenging showcase in Switzerland’s penalty shootout win over Colombia. He will look for a better outing in this one.

6:00 p.m.: Alvarez got the start last time out and failed to do much to test Egypt’s backline. Will Lionel Scaloni look towards Lautaro Martínez, who provided the game-winning assist to Enzo Fernandez in Argentina’s triumph? Only time will tell…

5:10 p.m.: Messi has been Argentina’s most prolific attacker thus far. He’ll look to continue his rich run of scoring on Saturday and score in his ninth straight World Cup match.

4:30 p.m.: Johan Manzambi’s absence will be a huge loss to Switzerland, who will look to reproduce what Cape Verde and Egypt showcased in their Round of 32 and Round of 16 tilts with La Albiceleste: they’re susceptible to fast-paced transitions.
