Argentina enjoyed a stunning run to the World Cup in 2022. Four years on, La Albiceleste fancies itself favorites to return to the podium — this time in the United States.
Lionel Scaloni’s side is once more adorned with superstars, headlined by the country — and sport’s — greatest-ever player, Lionel Messi. The 38-year-old is likely playing in his last World Cup. He has shown few signs of slowing down, producing 13 goals in 16 appearances for Inter Miami.
He’s joined by a host of other noteworthy talents, including Julian Alvarez and Enzo Fernandez. They expect to get all they can handle in the form of Algeria, one of Africa’s finest sides.
The Desert Warriors, too, are teeming with talent, namely former Leicester City and Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez. At their best, the Algerians can be a swashbuckling bunch. They haven’t been at their best as of late, however, failing to assert themselves in January’s African Cup of Nations.

8′: Algeria and Argentina denied goals after matching offsides calls
9:10 p.m: Moments after Argentina saw its dreams of a Messi goal called off due to an offsides, Algeria experienced the same scornful existence. Fares Chaibi thought he found a target with a deft finish at the near post. However, the linesman deemed that he had gone too early. Somehow, we remain level at zero goals apiece.
