94 days till Arizona Cardinals' opener: Remembering the 1994 season

We can officially commence the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals‘ regular season. Today, Thursday, June 11, is 94 days away from the Arizona Cardinals’ regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.

With 94 days until Week 1, let’s look back at the 1994 season for the Cardinals.

A look back at the 1994 season for the Cardinals

The 1994 season was interesting. It was the first season with Buddy Ryan as head coach, and he gave fans a little hope because he had the defense playing well.

They started out the season 0-3, but won five of their final seven games to finish 8-8. It was the team’s first non-losing season in Arizona. They allowed only 11.1 points per game over their final seven games.

Offensively, they were pretty bad, scoring the second-fewest points in the league (14.7 points per game), but they allowed the fourth-fewest points at 16.7 per game.

Three different quarterbacks started for the Cardinals — Steve Beuerlein (the starter prior to 1994), Jay Schroeder and Jim McMahon.

1994 offensive leaders

It was overall a bad year for the passing game. Beuerlein, Schroeder and McMahon combined for only 11 touchdown passes all season and threw 19 interceptions. Beuerlein had the most passing yards (1,545) and touchdown passes (5) but also led in interceptions (9). He was 3-4 as a starter. Schroeder went 5-3 in eight starts, passed for 1,510 yards, four touchdowns and seven picks.

They did not have a 1,000-yard rusher or 1,000-yard receiver.

Ronald Moore led in rushing with 780 yards, averaging 3.4 yards per attempt.

Larry Center had the most catches with 77 for 647 yards. Gary Clark had 50 catches for a team-high 771 yards, while Ricky Proehl had 51 catches for 651 yards and a team-high five touchdowns.

Jeff Feagles led the league with 98 punts.

Linebacker Eric Hill led the team with 120 total tackles.

Defensive linemen Michael Bankston and Eric Swann tied ofr the team lead in sacks with seven. Bankston had 85 total tackles. Seth Joyner was a Pro Bowler with six sacks and three interceptions. Aeneas Williams was a Pro Bowler with a league-high nine interceptions.
