Lamar Jackson might not be with the Baltimore Ravens forever.

The basic fact is simple: He’s got two years left on his current contract. That puts a timeline on things, with Jackson currently on board for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.

Add in the fact that Jackson doesn’t have an agent, so you get negotiations that are a bit more difficult.

And the Ravens brought in new coaches this offseason after missing the playoffs, so the vibes could be different, too.

Maybe that’s a good thing and brings Jackson to the table for a new deal.

Or maybe it sends things on a path toward the Ravens pursuing a Jackson trade next offseason after failing to get an extension signed and not wanting to lose him for nothing.

“There are high hopes for the offense, but if it doesn’t come together, will Jackson be even less eager to do an extension next spring than he was this spring?” ESPN’s Dan Graziano wonders as part of a new article on Tuesday. “And if so, do the Ravens look at trading him next offseason? Again, we could be panicking over nothing. But keep these questions in the back of your mind until there’s word of a new deal.”

If Jackson does get a new contract, it’ll likely be for a record-setting amount, which also forces the Ravens to at least contemplate whether they truly believe Jackson is worth that much.

He’s a two-time MVP, so there’s an obvious case to be made in his favor. But it’s also not just throwing around some loose change. Baltimore has a lot to think about.

The Ravens just better be careful. If they don’t approach this the right way, their QB situation could look quite worse in a few seasons.
