The San Diego Padres may be down, but they sure as heck are not out yet. In Game 3, the Padres pulled out a dramatic a 4-3 victory to stay alive in the NLDS against the Milwaukee Brewers, cutting the series deficit to 2-1 to force another game at Petco Park.
This game came down to the wire yet again. The Brewers made the Padres sweat in the top of the ninth; with San Diego leading by just one run and Michael King having gotten the first out of the inning, William Contreras drew a nine-pitch walk to bring the winning run to the plate. King then walked the subsequent batter, Brice Turang, giving Milwaukee two runners on base with just one out in the inning.
This was proving to be a deja vu moment for the Padres. They had no choice but to leave King out on the mound with other starter-turned-relievers Joe Musgrove and Robbie Ray not yet ready from the bullpen, and King had to face Christian Yelich to try and get out of the jam. And on the very first pitch of the at-bat, Yelich hit a ground ball towards shortstop, which Xander Bogaerts picked up and took to the second base bag before firing it to first to end the game with a double play.

Walks proved to be the Padres’ undoing in Game 2, with Mason Miller saying after the game that he broke a cardinal rule by beating himself with those free bases he allowed. King was almost following in his footsteps. But all is well that ends well, and the Padres are still alive and kicking in this year’s postseason.
It was very crucial for the Padres to get their insurance fourth run in the sixth, with Miguel Andujar scoring on the Brewers’ error. Milwaukee had cut the deficit to just one in the seventh, courtesy of an RBI single from Yelich, which set up the incredible finish. But Yelich, faced with another clutch at-bat, could not deliver another gut punch. And now, both teams will return to Petco Park on Wednesday for Game 4.
