After giving up a one-play touchdown drive to Jasper County, Glenn Hills quickly responded. They needed only a punt return by junior Jackson Couamin to get on the board. But that was the best thing that would happen for the Spartans all night. They’d go on to give up 46 unanswered points and go on to lose 53-6 to the Hurricanes on Friday, Sept. 18.
The loss was by far the Spartans’ worst of the season. But despite the beatdown Glenn Hills suffered, there’s still optimism surrounding the team regarding this season. After going winless last year and winning a total of four games in the last four seasons, the team sits at 2-2 so far in 2026.
Even their first loss of the year in Week 4 was only a one score game. All things considered, that’s progress for a team whose closest loss was a two-score affair and their worst being an almost 11 touchdown difference on the scoreboard. For Spartans head coach Harry Desile and the rest of the coaching staff, that’s a sign that what they are doing is working.
“The progress is sticking together. We’ve got a lot of guys down, but no excuses,” Desile said. “Like I told them, we went 2-0, we can easily lose the rest of them and we’ll stick together and make sure we’re focused every day when we come to practice. The positive thing is that we’ve got guys banged up, hopefully they’ll come back next week or the week after that. But them being positive, picking each other up, that’s all that matters. As long as we’re sticking together, that’s all I want.”
For a program that’s been in rebuild mode for quite a while, being able to build those winning habits are important even if the results aren’t what they are looking for. Even when the score began getting out of hand, the coaches would bring the players back to the sidelines and tell them “don’t lie down”.
That’s not just a coach motivating a player, that’s helping develop them as an individual. There’s still over half a season left for the Spartans to get back on the track they started the season on. But even if they revert back to what they have been doing over the last few years, learning life lessons such as overcoming adversity is what’s most important for the Spartans coaching staff.
Glenn Hills will head on the road during Week 6 to take on Josey in hopes that they’ll be able to get back in the win column. A third win would give the team the most wins they’ve had since the 2019 campaign. The Spartans more than likely won’t be in contention for a region title this year, but, the progress their making is what matters most.
