Just a gynaecologist – Senegal football boss lambasts team doctor

The fall-out from Senegal’s World Cup elimination has continued with the federation president accusing the team doctor of only being a gynaecologist and not knowing enough about sports medicine.

Abdoulaye Fall told reporters that Abdourahman Fedior did “not meet the medical requirements of a team that takes part in a World Cup. He is a gynaecologist.”

Fedior reacted angrily in a radio interview on Tuesday.

“I was really surprised by his accusations,” the doctor said, explaining that he was initially trained as a gynaecologist but then completed a degree in sports medicine and sports biology. He has been the Senegalese team’s doctor since 2017.

The Senegalese Association for Sports Medicine expressed its support for Fedior and described the federation president’s remarks about him as “unfounded and defamatory.”

Senegal were knocked out of the World Cup 3-2 by Belgium in the last 32 despite leading 2-0.

Coach Pape Thiaw was sacked on Sunday, a week and a half after their elimination.

He caused controversy at the African Cup of Nations final in January when he ordered his players off the field in protest at a refereeing decision.

They eventually returned and won the match on the pitch, but weeks later had the trophy awarded to Morocco because of Thiaw’s actions.

Media reports say 1998 France World Cup winner Patrick Vieira is a candidate to take over.
