Nikola Jokić finally clarified report he may delay a Nuggets contract extension

We’re in the middle of one of the most important summers in three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić’s incredible career.
As his Denver Nuggets navigate a roster game of musical chairs, Jokić’s noticeably trimmer appearance already shows how serious he is about leading the franchise to another championship. However, based on new comments that Jokić made about reports he may delay a huge contract extension with the Nuggets this summer, he also sounds serious about the business side of things. But, crucially, that business aspect has nothing to do with his long-term future in Denver.
Nothing has changed about Jokić’s commitment to the Nuggets. Not one bit.
After Serbia’s dominant 94-81 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in a 2027 World Cup qualifier on Monday, Jokić maintained that his plan is, in fact, to delay signing a Nuggets contract extension for one more year. But doing that is not Jokić’s way of positioning himself for a blockbuster 2027 free agency, the way some might believe.
No, no. Far from it:

As Bennett Durando of the Denver Post reports, Jokić delaying an extension now would allow him to opt out of his current contract next summer only to then turn around and sign a longer extension with the Nuggets (with another lucrative year’s worth of salary, of course) that would keep him on the Colorado Front Range through 2032 instead of only 2031.
In effect, the delay is all about Jokić ensuring himself more guaranteed stability and security in a city and on a Nuggets team he loves playing for:
“My idea is to sign next summer and stay in Denver for the rest of my life (career).”
Nuggets have remained bullish recently that Jokic doesn’t plan on going anywhere, per team sources. This move allows him to opt out next summer and sign through 2032 instead of ‘31, I’m told. https://t.co/jw8sMw6nSa

You can rest easy, Nuggets fans. The greatest player in franchise history clearly doesn’t plan on leaving Denver any time soon.
Has Nikola Jokić reportedly delaying his extension affected the Nuggets already?
While Jokić doesn’t plan on leaving, that doesn’t mean his decision to delay a long-term extension hasn’t indirectly exerted some much-needed pressure on Nuggets leaders. Denver began the offseason reportedly looking to duck the NBA’s dreaded second apron. In recent days, the Nuggets are signalling that they’re actually willing to go into the second apron while maintaining (and perhaps even adding to) one of the NBA’s best rosters.

“This is not a team that has been operating in recent days with a determination to stay below the second apron…”

There’s no way that isn’t related to Jokić’s current position as the Nuggets seem to feel more obligated to keep their franchise superstar happy while giving him a chance to compete for another NBA title.
