The Milwaukee Brewers are sitting atop the NL Central, and it would not be a surprise at all if this team went out and made some additions at the trade deadline.

An upgrade in the infield, specifically at third base, would be a big help. But, they also really need to upgrade their rotation, especially after Brandon Woodruff’s injury.

Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers is the dream pickup, but according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the latest on the Brewers’ chances to get Skubal are not good at all. Unfortunately, a blockbuster trade for Skubal doesn’t look likely for the Brewers.

Brewers not likely to trade for Tarik Skubal

“The Brewers are unlikely to trade big prospects for a rental like Skubal, according to people briefed on their thinking,” Rosenthal reports.

Skubal, the back-to-back AL Cy Young award winner, is the prize of all prizes at the 2026 MLB trade deadline. For the Brewers, he’d be the best possible move they could make.

Adding Skubal to Jacob Misiorowski and Kyle Harrison in the rotation would give Milwaukee a big three that could shut down the Los Angeles Dodgers and all the top offenses in baseball.

But, since the Tigers are going to ask for a king’s ransom for Skubal, even as a rental for one year, the Brewers are not likely to be involved in the sweepstakes.

Of course, the Brewers still have time to reverse course, but based on this report from Rosenthal, they’re much more likely to pursue cheaper additions this summer.

A Skubal-Misiorowski-Harrison rotation would be a dream, but that’s not likely to happen. It’s not totally impossible, but for now, it’s looking more likely that the Brewers will target some cheaper assets at the deadline.

Robbie Ray or Freddy Peralta would make sense for the rotation, and there’s bound to be others who become more readily available between now and the deadline.

But, unfortunately, Skubal no longer seems to be a feasible option for Milwaukee. Rosenthal’s report isn’t what Brewers fans will like to hear, but now it’s time to shift gears and scout the other options on the market who are going to be cheaper to acquire.
