The Cleveland Cavaliers are expected to be one of the top suitors for free agent forward LeBron James.
2026 could be the final season of James’ career, and a return to Cleveland for a third stint with his hometown team, which selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, would be a fitting end.
However, the latest update on James’ free-agent plans and timeline isn’t great news for the Cavs’ chances of signing the four-time MVP.
LeBron reportedly views Miami Heat as more viable option than Cavs
James’ agent, Rich Paul, spoke to Mark Medina of Forbes and said that James’ decision on where he will play this upcoming season won’t come anytime soon.
There’s a chance James doesn’t sign until a few weeks from now.
“I don’t think this happens anytime soon,” Paul said to Medina regarding James’ free agency decision. “I don’t think it’ll be the next few days.”
In the same article, Medina added that James views a return to the Miami Heat as a more viable destination than going back to Cleveland, primarily because of Miami’s trade for two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Medina adds that James could be hesitant to sign a minimum deal with the Cavs, though it has been reported that the future Hall of Famer is prioritizing happiness over money this time around in free agency.
“James could experience a more organic farewell tour in his third stop in Cleveland, but he has fielded skepticism that he would join the Cavaliers on a veteran’s minimum deal. He’s expected to view the Miami Heat as a more viable option after they acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks,” Medina wrote.
Both the Heat and Cavs figure to be among the top contenders in the East this season, so joining either squad would give James a chance to win his fifth championship.
But as of right now, Cleveland has the much deeper roster, and if the team can also re-sign James Harden, which is the expectation, LeBron could be the missing piece that elevates them into title favorites.
Though this update from Medina isn’t great news for the Cavs, the franchise is still one of the favorites to land James. The chance to conclude his professional basketball journey where it all started on a contending team is a fantastic pitch from Cleveland that LeBron and Paul will have to consider.
