Los Angeles Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan returned to Triple-A at the beginning of the month, and is making a strong case for an MLB return already.
Sheehan, 26, struggled with the Dodgers during his time in MLB this season despite remaining in the rotation for the majority of the year. He had a 5.29 ERA through 20 starts, striking out 108 batters in 95.1 innings pitched. His biggest struggles came with allowing home runs and issuing walks, but he has taken huge steps forward in the minors.
The Dodgers sent him down after acquiring Tarik Skubal at the deadline, and he’s been lights out in Triple-A. Through four starts, Sheehan has a 1.50 ERA through 18 innings while striking out 24 batters. His efforts through those four starts earned him the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Month award for August.

Sheehan’s 0.94 WHIP, .161 batting average against, 12.0 strikeouts per nine innings and five hits allowed per nine innings all led PCL pitchers with at least 15 innings pitched in August.
The right-hander’s best work came in his three most recent starts, as he allowed just one earned run through 17.1 innings pitched during those outings.
Could Emmet Sheehan Return to the Dodgers’ Rotation This Season?
While the Dodgers’ rotation is rather packed with all of their players fully healthy, they currently don’t have many options due to injury.
Tarik Skubal, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Yoshinobu Yamamoto are all healthy, but beyond those four, just about everyone is injured.
Justin Wrobleski just returned from the injured list but struggled in his first appearance back from the IL, Roki Sasaki remains on the IL with a blister on his right middle finger, Eric Lauer landed on the IL with an elbow issue earlier this week and Shohei Ohtani is still yet to make a return to pitching.
With Gavin Stone also still working his way back, Sheehan is in a great position to take back his spot in the rotation if he continues posting these kinds of results. Lauer’s next turn in the rotation would have come in the upcoming weekend against the Washington Nationals, so Sheehan’s next opportunity to play for the Dodgers could come as soon as this weekend.
