Why did Gordon Hayward mention Tatum's camp talking about the Jaylen Brown trade impetus?
The Boston Celtics have thrived for the most part under the guidance of Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens in that role. So much so that throughout his tenure as an executive of the team he joined as a head coach fresh off a pair of NCAA title games with Butler in 2013 that it became a catchphrase among fans to trust Stevens.
That trust might be shattered among a large subset of those fans now after the trade of star forward Jaylen Brown for Paul George and what is widely seen by analysts and fans alike as an underwhelming return. But former Boston and Butler small forward Gordon Hayward – a former teammate of Brown’s – weighed in on the situation in a recent SiriusXM radio appearance, and expressed confidence in the decisions of his former coach.
“I think Brad is extremely intelligent,” said Hayward. “And I know everybody says that, but I can tell you firsthand, just playing for him both in college and with the Celtics, he knows what he’s doing”
“And so sometimes, at the end of the day … you almost have to make a choice,” he added. “And also, who knows what was going down between (Jayson Tatum’s) camp and JB’s camp (…).”
“I know he didn’t formally demand a trade, at least I don’t think he did, but it used to be one of those things where that was an informal type of thing. So, I don’t know. I think Brad definitely looks at the analytics. He uses the analytics and then makes a decision based on that, and based on his gut, and what he thinks is going to be best for the Celtics.”
Was Hayward’s mention of Tatum’s camp a hint about trouble in what many of us have long assumed was paradise? Or just one of several things which might be behind the move that the Butler alum referenced hypothetically? Whatever the case, there is a story here not being told – and unlikely to be so before Stevens meets with the media on Monday.
