Denver Broncos fans across the country were obsessed with updates about quarterback Bo Nix’s ankle recovery this spring.
One (fake) photo went viral after it claimed to show Nix’s legs bent following ankle surgery this spring. The quarterback was asked about the hoopla surrounding his ankle recovery at mandatory minicamp last month.
“I think it’s funny,” Nix said. “One, no one has ever really cared about me this extensively for a long time, so I don’t think it’s a bad thing. I have little kids at the park asking me if my legs are crooked and all that. I think it’s sort of crazy we live in a culture where you get secondhand sources, and you just run with them and believe them.
“At the end of the day, I’ve been here before and I feel great. I’m going to be strong, and I’m going to be fast and elusive. Everything that I’ve done in the past, I’m going to be able to do again. It’s a broken bone for crying out loud. Everybody — probably — here has had an issue with a broken bone, and you end up right back the same. I feel really confident in myself and my training, and this will not hinder me at all.”
In a follow-up question, Nix was asked about his interaction with a kid at the park who asked about his legs.
“I asked him, ‘Does it look like my ankles are crooked?’” Nix recalled. “He sort of gave me a good, ‘No.’ Thank God he didn’t say, ‘Yes.’ I think it’s funny. The kid was probably 12, and that’s just the life that he lives. He thought it was cool to ask, but it is part of it. I learned a long time ago, when you live this life and when you are thrown into the center of attention, you carry a lot of burdens, good and bad, and you just have to roll with all of them.”
Nix participated in individual and 7-on-7 drills during minicamp, and he is expected to be at full-speed when the players report for training camp later this month. Now entering his third season in the NFL, Nix will aim to demonstrate this summer that the alarm about his ankle was overblown.
