It sounds crazy to say that a team like the Tampa Bay Rays could be in the mix for some of the top players in Major League Baseball, as that typically isn’t the way Tampa Bay goes about its business.

The Rays have done a lot of good over the past decade, but it’s by playing the game the right way and having guys who play above their contracts and status. That’s why, when it was announced that the Rays were interested in Shohei Ohtani, it shocked many around the baseball world.

However, that also showed that the Rays could be interested in adding a player at this year’s trade deadline that the New York Yankees could be interested in.

That player is none other than Tarik Skubal, with one reporter recently suggesting that the Rays could be a sleeper team for the Detroit Tigers ace.

“The Rays are always the stealthy trade partner because behind the scenes, they’re always at least trying on top players like Freddie Freeman and Shohei Ohtani, especially if they are superstars with the makeup and character to match like those two. Don’t be surprised if they’re a sleeper team on Tarik Skubal if he’s traded,” Jim Bowden wrote.

Relatively speaking, for the Yankees, this would be the worst outcome possible at the trade deadline. Not only do reports indicate that the Yankees are interested in Skubal, but losing him to a division rival that has been one of the better teams in the American League and is bound to play in the postseason if things go as planned would be a disaster.
