IRONMAN 70.3 Rockford arrives June 14. Here's what you need to know

ROCKFORD, IL — It’s almost race day.

Rockford will once again host thousands of athletes, spectators and volunteers for the second IRONMAN 70.3 Rockford the morning of June 14.

Here’s what to know before you go.

What is IRONMAN 70.3?

IRONMAN 70.3 is a half-distance triathlon consisting of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run for a total of 70.3 miles.

When does the race start?

The race begins at 7 a.m. Sunday, June 14, 2026, at the Rock River swim start north of the SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA.

How many athletes are competing?

Last year’s inaugural event attracted approximately 2,700 athletes. Organizers say hundreds of those competitors are returning for this year’s race.

How many volunteers help make the race happen?

More than 1,500 volunteers are expected to assist with athlete support, course operations, aid stations and race logistics throughout the weekend.

Where is the best place to watch?

The most popular viewing locations include the swim start near the Rock River Recreation Path, Riverfront Museum Park, Prairie Street Brewing Co., the downtown Rockton bike course, the downtown Rockford run course and the finish line area.

Is there an admission charge?

No. Spectator viewing areas and IRONMAN Village are free and open to the public.

What is IRONMAN Village?

IRONMAN Village serves as race headquarters and includes information booths, merchandise sales, athlete services and sponsor displays. It is located at Parking Lot 9, 318 S. Church St.

Will roads be closed?

Yes. Significant road closures and traffic delays are expected throughout downtown Rockford and portions of the bike course. The Rockford Police Department is encouraging residents to use Auburn Street, Morgan Street and Illinois 251 when possible.

Can I track an athlete?

Yes. Friends and family can track athletes using the official IRONMAN Tracker app and live online leaderboard.

Where can I park?

Parking is available at several downtown lots and garages, including the Concourse Parking Garage, the State and Main Parking Garage, the Pioneer Parking Garage and various downtown surface lots. Dedicated swim-start parking is available at 200 Y Blvd.

When do athletes begin finishing?

Top athletes could begin crossing the finish line shortly after 11 a.m., while competitors will continue finishing throughout the afternoon.

What should spectators bring?

Organizers recommend water, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, folding chairs, a portable phone charger and weather-appropriate clothing. Many viewing areas are outdoors with limited shade, so spectators should plan accordingly.
