While the NBA season is well in the rearview mirror and players around the league are resting up for the campaign to come, some are choosing to hone their craft for their national team in the meantime. This has been the case for Philadelphia 76ers‘ star VJ Edgecombe, who has been with the Bahamian national team for their qualification campaign for the FIBA World Cup.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone keyed into Edgecombe’s social media, as he’s been busy posting snippets from the team’s training sessions, including some shots of former Sixers rotation pieces, Eric Gordon and Buddy Hield. It’s worth noting that the team’s Sixers roots run a bit deeper; former two-way star Kai Jones also sits on the national team roster.
On Saturday afternoon, Edgecombe and the Bahamian team would take to the court against Jamaica for the fifth game of qualification.

The Sixers’ rookie would show off his talents against his opponents on Saturday, dropping 26 points and eight rebounds, shooting the lights out with 66.7 percent accuracy from the field, as well as 60 percent from beyond the arc. While this point tally doesn’t sound like too much, it was the highest total in the game, with Jamaica’s Andrew Thelwell’s 24 points coming as a close second.
But just as Edgecombe showed during his rookie year in Philadelphia, he isn’t just a force to be reckoned with on the offensive end of the court, as he was more than a defensive anchor, recording four steals in the Bahamian victory. During his rookie campaign, the Bahamian star recorded an average of 1.4 steals per game, but recorded four or more strips in a game on four occasions.
The next chance the basketball world will have to look at Edgecombe’s talents for the Bahamian national team will come on Monday, when they’re set to take on Puerto Rico for the sixth qualifying match.
