Coach Kyle Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers did almost exactly what the NFL world expected them to do in Week 2, beating the visiting Miami Dolphins 35-13 on a relatively quiet day from Christian McAffrey that still put him in Randy Moss territory. Quarterback Brock Purdy resembled the Super Bowl caliber player fans remembered as he adjusted following a Mike Evans injury.
After the game, Purdy’s performance was put into perspective by reporter Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group.
“Brocktober came early. By going 20-of-22 in today’s rout of Miami, Purdy’s 90.9 completion percentage ranked only behind a 20-of-21 effort in a 35-16 home win over Arizona in October 2023, the lone miss coming on his first attempt.”

Shanahan lauded his star quarterback after the game in comments shared by Inman.
“He was real sharp. On point. Got the ball to the right spots. He was great today,” Shanahan said.
Purdy picked up the 49ers’ running game with 30 rushing yards on 10 attempts including a touchdown, putting him over 300 total yards on a day when McCaffrey scored his 100th career touchdown. Tight end George Kittle recaptured the magic of past playoff runs with four catches for 80 yards and a touchdown, showing that the 49ers’ veteran roster looks serious about competing again this season.
September 27 brings a matchup against the upstart Arizona Cardinals that will give Shanahan, Purdy and Kittle’s team a new proving grounds leading up to October 11’s big game against Mike Macdonald’s defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks. The 49ers are a historically great franchise with plenty of historically great players still on the roster. Purdy is certainly one of them, and he showed why against the Dolphins in Week 2.
