49ers' Brandon Aiyuk update could be great news for Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are quite familiar with San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk, having shown previous trade interest in the All-Pro wideout back in 2024. But a new update on Aiyuk’s situation with the 49ers offers the Steelers a glimmer of hope.

According to NFL insider Jason La Canfora, the 49ers are expected to release Aiyuk before training camp after failing to find a trade partner.

“The San Francisco 49ers, after a protracted and personal battle with receiver Brandon Aiyuk, are finally prepared to move on from him, according to multiple league sources,” La Canfora wrote. “… The 49ers canceled their recent mandatory minicamp, which would have brought the situation to a head, but there is every expectation now that he will be released before the start of training camp.”

La Canfora also added that the Washington Commanders could be among a short list of potential suitors for Aiyuk, but that doesn’t completely leave the Steelers out of the mix.

Aiyuk, a Second-Team All-Pro receiver with multiple 1,000-yard seasons, could be exactly what the Steelers’ offense needs to take them from playoff hopefuls to Super Bowl contenders. After all, if the team is ultimately all-in on what’s shaping up to be Aaron Rodgers’ final season, why not kick the tires on a 28-year-old wideout with something to prove?
