Zeeland's Peyton Weenum is Holland Sentinel Girls Water Polo Player of the Year

Peyton Weenum is used to putting in the work.

The distance swimmer from Zeeland has used that work ethic to land a college swimming scholarship.

Weenum put in the same work in the pool for water polo.

“She had a motor that never quits,” Zeeland coach Zac Geschwendt said. “I knew better than to end her early during the pace test this year. She did get annoyed with me for trying to take her out of a game with a minute left.

“Peyton was the heart of Zeeland water polo this year.”

Weenum led Zeeland in goals and steals and was second in assists and drawn penalties. Her all-around strengths transformed into the Holland Sentinel Girls Water Polo Player of the Year.

“I have always been confident in my 2-meter offense and this season was no different. I was able to establish strong position and create scoring opportunities,” Weenum said.

But what helped set her apart was her all-around game.

“The area I improved the most was my 2-meter defense,” she said. “Even though it was a position that I had little experience in before this year, throughout the season, I worked on my positioning, awareness and physicality, which helped me become a more effective defender and better support my team on both ends of the pool.”

Weenum led Zeeland to regionals. While the team didn’t make the state tournament, it was a good season for the young team.

Zeeland's Peyton Weenum prepares to throw the ball on net against West Ottawa on Tuesday, March 25.

“I feel like our season went well,” Weenum said. “We may not have gone as far as we would have liked, but since we are a very young team I am more than confident that there are big things coming for Zeeland water polo.”
