LeBron James and Shohei Ohtani have been making records in their respective sports, but now the two sports icons are breaking records with their rookie cards.
The Los Angeles Lakers star and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher’s rookie cards were sold through Goldin Auctions on Sunday night for a record-breaking seven-figure deal per The Athletic. Ohtani’s one-of-a-kind 2018 Topps Chrome #150 SuperFractor sold for $2.56 million. It previously sold in 2022 for $139,200. The card is now his second-best-selling card behind his one-of-one 2025 Topps Chrome Gold MLB Logoman patch autographed card. That card sold back in December for $3 million.
While other trading cards of Ohtani had special features such as the 2025 Topps Chrome Gold MLB Logoman patch autographed card, it contained the gold MLB logo jersey patches he wore during the 2024 season; the sale of his 2018 Topps Chrome #150 SuperFractor had neither an autograph nor a special game-worn jersey element yet still sold for over $1 million.
The superstar pitcher’s rookie card is now in the same league as the NBA legend whose 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection rookie patch sold for $2.93 million. It was a part of a collection that only had 23 produced, and No. 9 of the collection was sold for the almost $3 million price tag. That collection of cards is some of the most highly sought rookie cards in sports.
Ohanti is regarded as one of the most influential players in MLB history. The four-time MVP was also crowned the Rookie of the Year in 2018. He is also a two-time World Series Champion and five-time MLB All-Star.
