The New York Yankees have a problem at the catcher position.
General manager Brian Cashman called it an “issue” when talking with reporters in Tampa Bay.
The lack of offensive production from Austin Wells and Ali Sanchez is unsustainable for a team with World Series aspirations.
J.C. Escarra, now in Triple-A, didn’t provide much of anything either.
One of New York’s rumored top catching trade targets plays for a bottom-three team in the Majors. Still, the NL West club may be reluctant to trade the two-time All-Star.
“But if they can honestly see a path to the postseason by 2028, then, no, Hunter Goodman shouldn’t be going anywhere,” Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller wrote about Goodman and the Colorado Rockies.
Goodman, 26, is one of the best young sluggers in baseball. He strikes out a ton, but the Yankees would most likely be fine with that if he connected for 40 home runs a season.
Not to mention, he performs better on the road than at Coors Field.
“He has been, hands down, their most valuable player since the beginning of last season, and they can keep him for another three years after this one,” Miller added about the Rockies keeping Goodman.

No, the Rockies are not in contention this year. But based on last year’s 43-win season, this is an improved team.
Even if Colorado wins just 25 of its remaining 64 games, that’s 21 more victories than last year.
The front office may feel they are slowly building a competitive roster, and Goodman may be off limits for the Yankees because of it.
