Why did the Mavericks choose Dusty May over Jon Scheyer?

The Dallas Mavericks finally came to a decision on their new head coach, agreeing to sign recent NCAA champion head coach Dusty May from Michigan. This comes after a long head coaching search that included May as well as Duke’s head coach Jon Scheyer.
Considering Scheyer’s experience with Dallas star Cooper Flagg, why did the Mavericks choose May?
Well, the most likely explanation was that Scheyer was unwilling to depart from Duke. Not only has Scheyer seen incredible success at the university since taking over, but he’s continued to field some of the strongest recruiting classes in the nation, making it difficult to leave the program.
While Michigan is also said to have a top-ranked recruiting class, May’s recent championship win and the departures of Yaxel Lendeborg, Aday Mara and Morez Johnson Jr. certainly may have played a role in his decision. Ultimately, Duke fans will be happy to know that Coach Scheyer will stay with the Blue Devils for the near future as they hope to lift their first NCAA title since 2015.
