Thinking about next year before the season starts is a bit wild, but LSU is already doing that for 2029. Working many years in advance is how college football teams can stay consistent and win. Obviously, in the current world of college football, recruits can decommit at any point, players can unexpectedly transfer, or transfers can flip, so putting multiple plans in place can go a long way.

LSU attempted to do this last season, but the QBs on the roster that could take over once Garrett Nussmier left were not the answers. This prompted the team to enter the transfer portal and land Sam Leavitt, which, hey, is not a bad outcome at all. Leavitt is going to be the starter in Week 1, and hopefully, could lead LSU to a really good first season under Lane Kiffin. But Leavitt is going to the draft after this year.

It will be great to see what happens in 2026, but 2027 isn’t far away. So, let’s talk about who could take over after Leavitt leaves.

Well, thankfully, Leavitt was not the only QB LSU went for in the portal. From USC, the Tigers got redshirt freshman Huson Longstreet. When it was announced that Longstreet would be leaving USC, fans were very upset, which is a good sign for the team that it will get the player. Longstreet was a 5-star QB from California, and when he was able to play last season, he showed some great things early on.

Longstreet likely transferred to LSU because of Kiffin and due to Leavitt leaving after one year. It’s the perfect scenario for him to sit, learn, and come in after a season to become the school’s starter.
