WNBA head coaches media backlash: Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunnigham clash on opinion, not on approach
On Saturday, Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve shared her opinion opposing Sophie Cunningham‘s stance about transgender men in women’s sports with reporters, according to ESPN. Perhaps Democrats and Republicans should take a lesson from these two women on how to share opposing views.
Cunningham said protecting young girls from biological men is “common sense,” and believes “there’s space for everyone.”
On Saturday, Reeves differing view came from a space seeking peaceful resolution.
“I come from a space of inclusion. The narrative that I think is problematic is to suggest that transgender athletes are the biggest problem in women’s sports. This is what’s bothersome. There is a faction of people in our country that are making this a massive issue,” Reeve told reporters.
“I don’t think these demonstrators are not being peaceful. Everyone has a right to peacefully assemble. That’s whether you agree with them or not.
“That’s where I say common-sense people get together and you find common ground. To find a way to be inclusive. The answer isn’t ‘no.'”
Reeve wore a shirt during last night’s Lynx-Fever game that read “Trans Kids Belong“. She also met with Cunningham at midcourt to have a conversation.

Reeve spoke on the pre-game discussion with Cunningham after the game, noting the importance of conversations with people who have opposing views to zonecoverage.com reporter Andrew Dukowitz.
“I think it’s great,” Reeve said. “I think both of us understand that we have platforms, and we both talked about more than anything wanting to educate and there’s some things we have in common and maybe some things you differ on, just like any issues. I think it’s how you handle things, and so it was nice to be in person for sure.”
