Wells leads Section VII golfers at NYSPHSAA meet

ROCHESTER — Ticonderoga’s Noah Wells turned in the best performance for Section VII at last weekend’s NYSPHSAA Golf Championships.
The two-day event for the boys was held at Mill Creek Golf Club in Churchville and featured 99 golfers from 11 sections.
Wells carded a two-day total of 79-76-155 to finish 39th.
Wells was also the top golfer for Section VII at last year’s state tournament where, as a freshman, he finished with an 81-80-161 total, good for 55th place.
Saranac Lake’s Ryan McGinnis-Theis placed 67th with an 81-84-165, and Peru’s Liam Clark was 68th with an 87-79-166. Clark’s 79 on the second day was only the third round under 80 for Section VII golfers in the event. Wells had the other two.
The remainder of the Section VII contingent included Peru’s Patrick Clark (70th, 86-81-167), Peru’s Cooper Sweeney (70th, 86-81-167), Moriah’s Silas Reeder (80th, 82-87-169), Saranac’s Rhys Fraser (90th, 86-90-176), Lake Placid’s Carver Bell (96th, 92-94-186) and Saranac Lake’s Jonah Peckham (97th, 95-97-192).
There were two Tupper Lake golfers competing and representing Section X, Wyatt Trudeau (31st, 74-80-154) and Aiden Churco (82nd, 89-81-170).
Two golfers ended up tied for first place overall, Ryan Liu from Section VIII’s Manhasset with a six-under par 70-66-136 and Charles Nevin from Section VIII’s Friends Academy, also with a six-under par 69-67-136.
Finishing third was Josh Yan from Section IX’s Newburgh Free Academy with a 67-72-139.
GIRLS
The two-day event for the girls was held Sunday and Monday at Wild Wood Country Club in Rush with 104 in the field.
Hayden Knapp from Section II’s South Glens Falls won the overall competition with a two-under-par 72-70-142.
She was followed by Rachel O’Rourke from Section III’s Rome Free Academy with a 71-73-144, Nina Choe from Section I’s The Ursuline School with a 78-68-146 and Delaney Abel from Section IV’s Corning PP with a 76-70-146.
The best score for the four golfers from Section VII was Northeastern Clinton’s Joyce Andrew, who took 96th with a 108-110-218.
Rounding out the golfers for Section VII were Boquet Valley’s Elizabeth Olson in 98th with a 108-111-219, AuSable Valley’s Farrah Goodman in 101st with a 118-120-238 and Willsboro’s Peyton Leerkes in 102nd with a 110-130-240.
