FOXBOROUGH, MA — Germany’s last goal in the knockout round of a World Cup could not have been more consequential, as Mario Götze’s strike in the 113th minute of the final against Argentina 12 years ago secured the fourth World Cup in the country’s history.
Until Kai Havertz put one in the back of the net with a header Monday during the round of 32 against Paraguay to give even the proceedings.
Trailing 1-0, Florian Wirtz played a ball into the box that Havertz barely nudged backward with the top of his head. It was a perfect angle and went to the bottom right of the goal past Paraguay keeper Orlando Gil.
