Frank Vogel has agreed to join the Golden State Warriors’ coaching staff under Steve Kerr, a league source confirmed to the Chronicle on Sunday. Vogel will serve as Golden State’s associate head coach, according to ESPN.

Vogel, a veteran coach with more than two decades of NBA experience, was the Dallas Mavericks’ associate head coach last season. Before that, he served as head coach of the Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, Orlando Magic and Indiana Pacers.

He’ll fill part of the void created by the departures of Jerry Stackhouse and Terry Stotts, who split lead assistant duties the last two seasons and parted with the Warriors in May.

Kerr, who signed a two-year contract in May to remain with the Warriors, hasn’t had an associate head coach since Mike Brown, who held the role from 2016-22 and departed for the Sacramento Kings after the Warriors’ title run. Kenny Atkinson was Kerr’s lead assistant from 2022-24 before he became the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Vogel, known for his defensive expertise, led the Lakers to the 2020 NBA championship and oversaw two conference finals runs as the Pacers’ head coach in 2013 and ’14. It’s worth noting that Vogel coached current free agent LeBron James while with Los Angeles from 2019-22.

While Vogel likely won’t be the last addition to Golden State’s coaching staff this offseason, he could end up being the most notable one.
