The Minnesota Vikings’ 39-22 come-from-behind victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday afternoon was crazy, to be sure. But it may have been even crazier than any of us thought it was while we were watching it.
Like, history-making levels of crazy.
According to OptaStats, the Vikings are the first team in NFL history to be trailing in a game by twelve or more points with less than 20 minutes remaining in regulation and end up winning that same game by at least seventeen points.
Trey Smack’s 26-yard field goal put the Packers ahead 22-10 with 5:12 remaining in the third quarter of play. After that, it was, quite literally, all Vikings. They scored the game’s final 29 points, including 22 points in the fourth quarter of play, to put together an improbable comeback win over their division rivals.
So, if you sat watching Sunday afternoon’s game thinking that you had never seen anything like that before, well. . .you’re right. You had never seen anything like that before. And neither had anybody else.
It’s always nice to see the Vikings on the right end of one of these statistics, isn’t it?
