UK to start fall camp without key players, expected to return ahead of season

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — The buzz continues around the University of Kentucky football program. With its first media day under head coach Will Stein in the books, it officially kicks off a new era of Wildcat football.

Stein spoke about how the team has continued to grow since the spring and his expectations for fall camp. The trajectory of the group sounds promising – with one detail causing slight concern.

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

During Stein’s opening statement, he acknowledged who will be sitting out in the early days of camp due to injury. That included wide receiver Nic Anderson, running back Jovante Barnes, defensive back Jaden Smith, linebacker Sam Green and guard Tegra Tshabola.

The silver lining – none of these injuries are season-ending. Each is on track in their respective healing process, all anticipating to be back before the season.

Another way to look at it with a positive spin is ththat is now also allows other guys to get in extra reps while building depth within its roster.

“As we get into fall camp, there are a few players that I just want to note that because I know I’ll be asked about it,” said Stein. “These are guys that initially will not be involved in practice and then are getting back. Nic Anderson is working back to full speed work, had a really good summer. Vonte Barnes as well; Jaden Smith is in that same category. Same Green, to me, is looking great – I am expecting him to be a factor on defense this year. And then Tegra had a minor procedure and will be back within the next week or so. So, nothing that is a major season-ending setback. But I want this team to be as competitive as possible from top down with the roster. Why? Because we have to have strength in numbers. That, to me, is a key component in playing winning football, especially in October and November where championships happen.”
