A majority of Berlin residents supports the city’s planned Olympic bid but the backing is less than at a first survey conducted three months ago.
The survey by the Dimap institute commissioned by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) said that 38% said “yes” and 18% “more or less yes” when asked whether they backed the bid.
At the other end, 25% said “no” and 13% “more or less no.”
In March, 60% supported the bid which means a drop of 4%. The opposition to the bid rose by 7% from 31%.
The survey was conducted May 26-30 among 1,205 people in the German capital.
Berlin’s Olympics commissioner Kaweh Niroomand said that “56% backing are a strong result and show that the majority of Berliners know about the opportunities an Olympic bid offers.”
Berlin is competing against Munich and a Cologne led Rhine-Ruhr area bid for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Games. The DOSB will select the bidder and the year on September 26.
Munich’s bid has been backed by 66.4% in a referendum and Cologne/Rhine-Ruhr by 66%. Berlin has no referendum but parliamentary approval.
A fourth candidate, Hamburg, dropped out on Sunday after a large majority of 54.9% opposed their bid in a referendum.
Germany has hosted Summer Olympics 1936 in Berlin and 1972 in Munich.
