Summerfield, Gibraltar Carlson and New Boston Huron got their football seasons off to successful starts.
Summerfield rolled to a lopsided win, Carlson broke open a close game in the second half and Huron held off a late rally to post victories on Thursday, Aug. 27.
The start was not so kind to Airport and Dundee.
Airport could not quite complete a comeback and Dundee fell to a talented Adrian squad.
The nine other Monroe County Region teams kick off their seasons on Friday, Aug. 28.
Summerfield 42, Flint Beecher 0
PETERSBURG – Summerfield opened the game by intentionally taking a delay-of-game penalty to honor Summerfield student Conor Harrigan who lost his life this summer in an ATV accident.
The tribute continued as Austin Taylor ran 65 yards for a touchdown on the first play. He finished with 169 rushing yards on 9 carries and scored three TDs and a pair of 2-point conversions.
Logan Schwichtenberg completed all four of his passes for 72 yards and touchdowns to Trent Miller (22 yards) and Hudson Crots (20 yards).
Mason Hephner scored the final TD on a 2-yard run.
“It was a really good win,” Summerfield coach Dylan Szegedi said. “I am happy with the boys. Everybody got in.”
Miller led the defense with two interceptions.
Gibraltar Carlson 45, Wyandotte Roosevelt 14
WYANDOTTE – Brennan Hudson made his debut as Carlson’s starting tailback with 190 yards and 4 touchdowns on just 15 carries.
The Marauders were nursing a slim 17-14 lead at halftime, but exploded after the intermission.
“We had to overcome some adversity in the first half with penalties and two turnovers,” Carlson coach Jason Gendron said. “We went into halftime and stayed calm. We’re a young football team with 16 guys getting their first start tonight.”
Other TDs came from Myles Hampton and Asher McCall on a 24-yard pass from Cole Federoff. Jaxon Sladich kicked a 26-yard field goal.
Tecumseh 40, Airport 34
CARLETON – Airport gave up 40 points in the opening half, then made a second-half rally that fell just short.
“This game was exciting to the end,” Airport coach Derek Anderson said. “It was a tale of halves for the Jets.”
Patrick Murphy ran for 137 yards on 15 carries, Colton Alston completed 6-of-11 passes for 196 yards and Mason Stoneburner caught 4 passes for 194 yards.
Murphy scored on runs of 16 and 12 yards, Alston threw a 10-yard TD pass to Cash Nye, Stoneburner had a 65 yards touchdown catch and Jay’len Strong reached the end zone on a 9-yard run.
New Boston Huron 40, Lake Fenton 28
NEW BOSTON – Huron won its opener for the first time since 2020.
The Chiefs led 26-7 at the half and held on.
Adrian 50, Dundee 14
DUNDEE – Dundee could not keep up against an Adrian team coming off a 9-2 season, its best record since 2010.
