The Philadelphia Phillies entered the 2026 season with high expectations, but few could have predicted the historic dominance Cristopher Sánchez would display on the mound.

The left-hander has emerged as one of the premier pitchers in Major League Baseball and a legitimate National League Cy Young Award contender thanks to a season that has featured record-breaking performances and remarkable consistency.

Sánchez rewriting the record books

Sánchez etched his name into baseball history earlier this season by throwing 50⅔ consecutive scoreless innings, breaking a 115-year-old Phillies franchise record. The streak also established a new Major League Baseball record for a left-handed pitcher and ranks as the third-longest scoreless streak in MLB history regardless of position.

While the streak eventually came to an end, Sánchez has shown no signs of slowing down.

Entering Thursday, the Phillies ace led all National League qualified pitchers with 93⅓ innings pitched and ranked first in complete games with one. He also sat tied for second in the league with eight wins while ranking second in both ERA (1.54) and strikeouts (113).

His dominance extends beyond traditional statistics. Sánchez entered Thursday leading all Major League pitchers in FanGraphs WAR (3.9), further illustrating his value and impact. Advanced metrics have also highlighted the effectiveness of his devastating changeup, which has been graded as the most valuable pitch in baseball this season according to run value.

Hitters simply have not found an answer for Sánchez’s combination of command, movement, and deception. His ability to generate weak contact while piling up strikeouts has made him one of the most difficult pitchers in the game to face.

Even after his scoreless streak ended, Sánchez immediately returned to form. In his most recent outing against the Toronto Blue Jays, he struck out 10 batters over seven dominant innings. It marked his seventh consecutive start of at least seven innings, a stretch that dates back to May 5.

With elite production, historic achievements, and remarkable consistency, Cristopher Sánchez has not only become the ace of the Phillies staff but has established himself as one of baseball’s most dominant pitchers in 2026.
