Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever had a side job at UFC 329 over the weekend. This Indiana Fever player acted as a special Octagon girl on a Round 1 card.

According to the video uploaded by Fever beat writer Tony East, Cunningham says that she got this job literally five minutes before it occurred. She explains that she and UFC CEO Dana White became good friends, and that the fight was her first time attending a UFC event in person.

“So, when did you find out about last night’s opportunity to do what you did?” Cunningham was asked. She replied that it was literally five minutes before, and even said that White greeted her at the event.

According to Cunningham, she joked with White about helping them if the promotion needed a ring girl. He initially reacted lightly, but then said he would hold the card for the first round of the main event. He surprised her by how serious he was, but she called the experience “so much fun” and “great environment.”

When Cunningham was asked whether she had time to prepare for the job, she said she hadn’t practiced. “At the end of the day, you hold the card up, and you turn left,” she explained. And the event’s regular ring girls guided her through this process. The ring girl’s role, according to Cunningham, requires “a little personality, a little sass,” and she liked it.

UFC’s official Twitter account thanked Cunningham in the post about her participation at UFC 329, sharing a 14-second video of her holding the Round 1 card.

This video shows Cunningham raising the card in the air while cheering, moving through the arena with it, and later sitting with other women in the production area, smiling, and pointing at something.

Cunningham also spoke about being in Las Vegas, mentioning the beach club she visited before the fight.

She believed that other WNBA players were present at this UFC event, citing it as evidence of crossover support for the WNBA from other sports.

“I think that’s part of, you know, where the WNBA is at, is that people want us to be involved and are giving us those opportunities,” she said. Also, Cunningham mentioned that the WNBA schedule is tough and they do not have any spare time, so any chance to connect with teammates and do some fun activities outside is a perfect one. “Our schedule is brutal,” she said. “We really don’t get to do a lot of stuff… so when we do have a couple of days to, you know, team bond or go do stuff that is fun and extracurricular, of course we’re going to say yeah to that.”

Sophie Cunningham was wearing a Fever uniform during the interview before scoring 20 points in their game against the Las Vegas Aces.
