Skilled Trades Face 1.3 Million-Worker Talent Gap, AI Unlikely to Reduce Demand: Report

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. — U.S. employers face a shortage of approximately 1.3 million skilled-trades workers as demand for assemblers, maintenance technicians, electricians, welders and other hands-on occupations outpaces the number of people completing training programs, according to a new report from labor-market analytics firm Lightcast. The report finds that advances in artificial intelligence are unlikely to eliminate much of that demand. More than 70% of skilled-trades occupations have an AI exposure score below 30%. In some cases, AI could add to the demand for skilled workers rather than reduce it. Lightcast points to the rapid construction of data centers and other AI infrastructure as one example.
