The Red Sox traded right-handed pitcher Tyler Uberstine to the Braves for right-handed hitting outfielder Eli White before Monday’s trade deadline.
White, 32, is batting .233 with a .285 on-base percentage, .406 slugging percentage and .691 OPS in 69 games (144 plate appearances) for Atlanta this season. He has five home runs, six doubles, one triple, 17 RBIs, nine walks and 31 strikeouts.
He’s a career .212 hitter with a .270 on-base percentage, .353 slugging percentage and .623 OPS in 345 major league games.
“Trace (manager Chad Tracy) and I have talked through that and feel like he gives us kind of a right-handed option to get Ceddanne (Rafaela) a day if he needs it,” chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said. “He can really, really defend. And if we wanted to give Wilyer (Abreu) or Jarren (Duran) a day, can throw him out there and feel like we’re not missing a beat defensively.
“He can change a game with his defense. He can change a game with his speed,” Breslow added. “We think that he’ll give a good at-bat as well. So there are ways to make this work. We are going to do that and feel like he adds another level of athleticism to what I think has become the identity of this team.”
He has played all three outfield positions and his arm strength is in the 78th percentile (88.7 mph). His sprint speed is in the 99th percentile.
Uberstine, 27, made his MLB debut for Boston on April 5 against San Diego. He pitched 2 ⅔ innings out of the bullpen, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out two.
He was on Triple-A Worcester’s injured list from April 16-June 14 with right shoulder soreness. Overall for the WooSox this season, he has a 3.23 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and .209 opponent batting average in 19 outings (three starts). He has 48 strikeouts and 14 walks in 39 innings.
Boston added Uberstine to its 40-man roster in Novembeer 2025, protecting him from the Rule 5 Draft. He wasn’t recruited out of high school, having pitched just seven innings as a senior. The Red Sox’ 2019 19th round draft pick out of Northwestern throws a mid-90s fastball, a cutter, a sweeper and a changeup.
