The Boston Red Sox are a team that many around MLB have pegged as a potential seller this summer. The team isn’t playing well, and it’s been a very disappointing season thus far.
Unless things take a drastic turn, the Red Sox selling this summer makes the most sense for the future of the franchise. If they do sell, there are some interesting trade assets they could make available.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported recently that the Red Sox have four trade assets which are “thought to be available” by those around MLB, and that list includes first baseman Willson Contreras.
Red Sox believed to have 4 big trade assets available this summer
“The Boston Red Sox will be on everyone’s speed dial next month with starter Sonny Gray, closer Aroldis Chapman, outfielder Jarren Duran, and possibly first baseman Willson Contreras thought to be available,” Nightengale writes.
The Red Sox making all four of those players available for trade would be a very big update for the MLB trade deadline for teams around baseball.
Chapman and Duran are two players who make too much sense not to trade this summer if they are selling. Duran is under club control through 2028, but is someone the club has tried trading before, and should look to trade this summer.
There might not be a better reliever available by this year’s trade deadline than Chapman, which should help the Red Sox get something solid in return for a superstar closer who is under control through the 2027 season.

But Gray and Contreras both have no-trade clauses, and yet, Nightengale is listing them as players who could be on the move this summer.
If both players are willing to waive these no-trade clauses, the Red Sox should try their hardest to trade the pair of offseason additions, as they could get some very strong returns.
Boston is a likely seller this season, and while Duran and Chapman are obvious names, and even Gray wouldn’t be too surprising to see moved, the potential for a Contreras trade seems a bit more possible now than before this Nightengale update.
There are still a lot of hurdles to clear for a Contreras trade, but at the very least, the door seems to be open to a deal by the August 3 deadline later this summer.
