The San Antonio Spurs made an earlier-than-expected run to the NBA Finals, led by generational talent Victor Wembanyama, before falling to the New York Knicks.

That headline-grabbing stretch has apparently caught the attention of PETA — yep, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

They want the Spurs to change their name to the San Antonio Spores.

Spores, as in, mushrooms.

Why does PETA want this?

It’s because a ‘spur,’ at its core, is a sharp metal object that is used to direct horses — and it probably isn’t the most pleasant feeling.

This is how PETA explained it in a press release:

“With the San Antonio Spurs fresh off their thrilling NBA Finals run, PETA is passing the team a winning play for next season: break away from a name that celebrates sharp metal objects designed to torment animals, and rebrand as the San Antonio Spurs — as in, mushroom sports — and for good reason. In a letter sent today to managing partner Peter J. Holt, PETA explains that promoting spurs can be seen as glorifying how animals abused in rodeos endure fear and trauma, broken bones and even fatal injuries, whereas choosing to embrace mushrooms would be the (moral) thing to do — and a true (champion) move: Texas is proud of its mushroom industry, and eating these nutritional all-stars supports brain and heart health and helps reduce cancer risk.”

PETA offers to provide new uniforms for the Spurs that feature the official state mushroom of Texas the Chorioactis geaster.

How likely is this to happen? Let’s just say it’s more probable that Wemby shrinks to become a 6-foot-4 human for next season.

It’s an entertaining effort, though.
