The Mason Miller trade rumors are heating up for the San Diego Padres.
Would the Padres seriously consider trading their dominant All-Star closer?
ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan have Miller’s chances of being traded at the deadline at 40%.
That’s not incredibly high, but it may indicate that the Padres are at least entertaining offers for the flamethrower.
If the Padres do deal Miller, they would prefer to attach a four-time All-Star infielder in the deal.
“Less than a year after giving up one of the top prospects in baseball in shortstop Leo De Vries to acquire Miller, the Padres are considering moving him,” McDaniel and Passan wrote. “They would love to attach Xander Bogaerts’ onerous contract to any trade, but that would severely limit their return and, frankly, nobody’s going to take it.”
Bogaerts, 33, is nowhere near the shortstop he was during his peak with the Boston Red Sox. He currently has a .220/.312/.325 slash line with a .638 OPS and nine home runs in 95 games.

But that level of production does not warrant an agreement to obtain his 11-year, $280 million contract, which runs through the 2033 season.
Sure, landing Miller would automatically give his new club the best closer in baseball. But adding Bogaerts’ contract would be less than ideal.
The Padres may have a harder time dealing Miller if they insist that Bogaerts, a declining player on both sides of the ball, is included.
