New York isn't ready for a Knicks championship in the social media era

The NBA is better when the New York Knicks are good.
You’ve probably heard that sentiment a lot over the last 27 years since the Knicks last competed for a title. But it’s never felt more true than during this year’s run to the NBA Finals.
Knicks fans are thriving under the spotlight of the NBA’s center stage, and it’s been fun to watch.
From the Knicks Tape era of Carmelo Anthony to the bing bongs of recent years, we’ve had glimpses of the sleeping giant that Knicks fandom was. But that beast has been fully awaken with this year’s run through the playoffs, and the content coming out of the city has been so good.
CELEBRITY ROW:Stars we may see on the MSG sideline
Personally, I’m here for the ridiculous but hilarious Sidetalk-style videos, but there’s wholesome stuff too, like Mayor Zohran Mamdani signing an executive order to repeal bedtimes so NYC kids can watch the finals.
As a Wizards fan, I’m used to watching the NBA Finals as a neutral observer. This year, though, it’s hard to hop on social media and not come across some form of Knicks content that leaves you in stitches and wondering… how will they act if the Knicks actually win?
The truth is, nobody knows. Because the Knicks haven’t won a title since 1973… before the internet even existed. Heck, people didn’t have computers yet. By comparison, the celebration in San Antonio if the Spurs win will seem like a funeral. They’ll act like they’ve been there before because they have (the fans, not the players. Victor Wembanyama might melt into a pool of tears). Twitter was almost 10 years old the last time the Spurs won a title.
LONG TIME COMING:Knicks have been through a lot since their last Finals
But New York has been so starved, I’m afraid they might actually burn the city down. I mean, they were jumping off lampposts just for reaching last year’s conference finals. NYPD had to put a ban on watch parties for this year’s ECF (it’s been cautiously lifted for tonight’s Game 1).
My official pick for the series is Spurs in 7. But I won’t be surprised if it goes the other way… nor will I be upset. A part of me wants to see what it looks like if the Knicks win it all.

One round after beating Naomi Osaka in the French Open, Aryna Sabalenka went down in a major upset Wednesday morning.
The world No. 1-ranked player, Sabalenka lost to Diana Shnaider in the quarterfinals after coming within one game of a straight-set win. She lost 10 straight games to blow the match.

With her loss, the French Open semifinals won’t have a former champion on either the men’s or women’s side for the first time since 1977.
