Fine, sure, the nation’s 250th birthday came to pass this weekend, but a week ago, July 1st marked the 15th anniversary of the Nebraska Cornhuskers joining the Big 10 Conference. It was the first shot fired in the gradual dismantling of the Big 8 which began when Texas, the aTm, Texas Tech and Baylor joined to create the Big 12. Fast forward to today and only half of the original members remain (Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State and Okie State – Colorado doesn’t count after only recently returning following a 13-year Pac-12 hiatus) and for that matter only half of the SWC schools (Baylor and Texas Tech).

For those past 15 seasons, the relationship has had its advantages and disadvantages as the conference has grown from 12 to 18 teams and moved in status from a member of the Power 5 to a clear Top 2 member of a Power 4. (And it’s still a Power 4 despite a new 9-team Pac-12 –check the new slate and tell me I’m wrong.)

So in the new world of college sports in 2026, with full 20/20 hindsight, was that decision the right one? – And Ketterson
