Lionel Messi’s record-breaking 2026 FIFA World Cup run got even richer with his quarter-final appearance against Switzerland.

Argentina will advance to the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup after defeating Switzerland 3-1 AET in the quarters.

Just stepping onto the field meant Messi broke another all-time World Cup record in what seems to be a legacy-defining run.

Lionel Messi makes World Cup history in the knockout rounds

With his appearance against Switzerland, Messi competed in the 15th knockout stage game of his World Cup career, the most of any in the tournament’s rich history.

  • Lionel Messi – 15 appearances
  • Miroslav Klose – 14 appearances
  • Paolo Maldini – 13 appearances
  • Lothar Matthaus – 12 appearances
  • Bastian Schweinsteiger – 12 appearances

While an extra knockout game from the 2026 World Cup onwards will allow elite players from top nations to rack up more appearances in the future, Messi also has multiple deep tournament runs on his resume.

The 2010 and 2018 World Cups saw Messi’s Argentina get eliminated in the Round of 16, while the 2006 World Cup saw Messi’s Argentina exit in the quarter finals.

Messi played the maximum number of games possible in the 2014 and 2022 editions, losing the Final in 2014 but finally winning the World Cup in 2022.

Lionel Messi also extends his World Cup assists record

Messi assisted Alexis Mac Allister’s 10th-minute opener in the quarter finals, the 10th assist he’s dished out at the tournament.

He had taken the lead for most all-time assists in the World Cup from the iconic Diego Maradona earlier in the tournament, but he’s now put himself in even rarer air as the first player in history to reach double figures in terms of assist contributions.

Messi leads the tournament in knockout appearances, goals, and assists, further highlighting how dominant his time at the biggest stage of world football has been.

With Argentina in the semis, Messi is guaranteed to add another appearance at a minimum and another opportunity to add to his goals or assists tally.

Ultimately, the only thing he’s after is lifting a second World Cup title, an achievement that might be just two wins away.
