Tien raised eyebrows during his match by asking for bread and eating a slice of plain bread at his chair during a match break. That is a big departure from the usual match snacks of bananas, fruit, and protein bars.

Tien’s stomach issues persisted and presumably were the reason he went to the hospital

He was dealing with stomach issues during the match which prompted the bread request. However, his hospital post confused fans.

Learner Tien walks out as heÕs announced before his quarterfinal match against Jannik Sinner at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., Thursday, March 12, 2026.

In the photo, we do not see Tien’s face; however, we observe his surroundings from a hospital bed with an IV, a visitor in a nearby chair, and a tray full of food.

That food looked to be of a fast food and fried variety including burgers and nuggets from McDonalds. It seems like the opposite diet of a person with stomach issues. We are not doctors, nor are we judging. Hopefully Tien is getting the care he needs and feels better soon.

Tien and Ben Shelton were considered American favorites to advance to the latter rounds of Wimbledon. With both out of the tournament, US men’s hopes rely on Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Taylor Fritz.
